When the People Curate — we join Newly Unionized Hotel Workers on Strike – A Recap

It was as full a house as we could hope for
.
Together we embodied how standard operating procedures can be shifted to accommodate realities they are not designed to acknowledge
.
We held space so everyone got a chance to speak – including and most especially our hosts
.
We did an unconventional panel by integrating a workshop that helped us shift from a format we are familiar receiving in such spaces (panel format) but one offering stories of resistance in museum spaces @decolonizethisplace and stories literally amplifying othered perspectives through meticulously crafted podcasts @whitestcube to a format perhaps not at familiar at such gatherings (workshop applying a zine as a workbook) introducing the museum as a tool of empire and untangling pathways to ancestors who lived closer to the earth and those who left for empire that we all embody as a possible way to understand decolonizing our persons as essential to decolonizing places #decolonizeourmuseums
.
(hope was that in shifting from analytical left (panel) to creative right brain (workshop) in community we may tease out some learnings from stuck places)
.
None of our presenters translated. We simply used the words we use with our comrades and community members #decenteringwhiteness
.
the whole experience from the moment I was informed our proposal “Protest of Power: When the People Curate” was accepted has been a performance of living the world we wish to live.
.
We fundraised for stipends to compensate intellectual labor that is often not acknowledged or credited of the culture workers on the panel; we joined the @unitehere 217 hotel workers on social media and on-site to confront their management; we moved the panel to the union hall by invitation
.
Small steps full of trust carving out and living fleeting interdependent pathways to liberation in the now. #nema2018
.
Much warm gratitude to everyone who journeyed in this process. The support for making the zine itself was an act of care that makes me emotional ????????????????
.
Finally, if you experienced new ideas, be sure to credit the people you heard it from each and every time. acknowledgement is how we make people meaningful to our growth and in our lives
